1797 $1 9x7 Stars, Small Letters, B-2, BB-72, R.4 -- Repaired -- NGC Details. Fine. Bowers Die State I. Although not as rare as once believed, the BB-72 Small Letters reverse is by far the scarcest of three varieties that comprise the entire mintage of this early Small Eagle issue. The NGC holder suggests a repair is the reason for the lack of a numeric grade, although the exact nature and area of the handwork is neither disclosed nor obvious. We note some microscopic porosity beneath deep-bronze toning and a vertical strike-through at the date and shoulder. As always for the variety, the obverse is quite sharper than the reverse.
