Morgan Dollars
1896-S $1 MS65 PCGS. The 6 in the date is faintly doubled at the top of the upper loop. Like many Morgans, the 1896-S is plentiful in Uncirculated condition but becomes challenging in Gem and above. Treasury releases ensured an ample supply of survivors, but few match the quality of this Gem example. This coin exhibits especially clean fields with only a minor abrasion above the cap and below B of PLURIBUS. The strike at the center of the obverse is a touch soft with roller marks evident on the hair and temple. Both sides are largely brilliant but display russet and blue-green at the rims. The reverse reveals light chatter above the motto, and there is a light die crack joining the peripheral letters. This issue is scarce at the MS65 level, and the populations of finer examples are all in the single digits.
