Patterns
1854 E1C One Cent, Judd-159a Electrotype, Pollock-186, High R.6, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Pollock states that the obverse die was created from a crudely reduced 1851 Seated dollar die using the portrait lathe. The reverse features a prominent 1 CENT denominational legend within a wreath of oak leaves and acorns. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The 4 was so weakly reproduced from the dollar die that it appears to be a 1. Numerous alloys were used to strike these crude patterns, including a wide variety of German silver compositions. This composition is straightforward: Struck in copper with a plain edge. However, it is a Mint-made electrotype with an obvious seam around the edge. The obverse is almost completely red with only a patch of brown seen on the left side, while the reverse is more evenly mellowed with a significant presence of brown over that side.
