Patterns
1869 1C One Cent, Judd-666, Unlisted in Pollock, R.5, PR65 PCGS. The obverse exhibits a bust of Liberty facing left with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery and the date below the bust. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. A Roman numeral I is centered in a laurel wreath on the reverse. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Several obverse / reverse variations are known of this pattern. This appears to be a previously unrecorded one. The 9 in the date is noticeably left of the usual position beneath the hair curl. The reverse is the often-seen one (A) with thick ribbon ends. Most curious is the nearly rim-to-rim obverse die crack that extends from 11 o'clock to the field just above the 5 o'clock position. Muted gray patina covers each side, but fails to subdue the brightly mirrored fields.
