Patterns
1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-888, Pollock-987, R.5, PR66 PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Simpson. A bust of Liberty wearing a cap ornamented with three stars faces right, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the figure, and a scroll with IN GOD WE TRUST is below. The reverse reads 25 CENTS 1870 in the center and is surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This reeded edge variant is fairly common and examples are known on 77-grain and 84-grain planchets. No weight is stated on the insert of this piece, but it does appear slightly thinner than a usual quarter, so perhaps this is a lighter weight piece. (It is not known which is scarcer.) This is a pattern of great visual interest. The surfaces are sea-green and purplish-rose with brightly reflective mirrors on each side. A couple of squiggly lint marks were struck into the surface on both obverse and reverse.
