1871 3C Three Cent Nickel, Judd-1045, High R.7, PR61 Brown PCGS. Regular dies trial for the three cent nickel. Struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com notes: "Although described as a regular dies trials piece in aluminum [and copper], these were actually struck for sale to collectors as part of complete sets." Irrespective of the intention of these strikings, these are exceptionally rare pieces. Our records indicate we have never handled one. Indeed, no major auction company has since 1993. The only record of sale is noted in the Judd book by State Rare Coin Auctions in January 1981. While fewer than a half dozen are estimated to exist, we have to wonder if there are even fewer; perhaps the copper strikings are actually R.8, like the aluminum pieces. The surfaces of this piece are bright from cleaning with some darker patina surrounding the obverse periphery and within the reverse devices. A very rare opportunity.
