Patterns
1871 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-1081, Pollock-1217, R.7, PR65 Red NGC. The Longacre Indian Princess design is surrounded by stars on the obverse, and paired with a reverse that features 10 CENTS in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, and the word STANDARD along the top border. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Only a half dozen or so pieces are known of this obverse / reverse combination in copper. The only other alternative are aluminum strikings, and only three of those are believed known. This example presents one of the rarest pursuits in pattern collecting: pieces that exist today with full red color. Very few copper patterns remain today with their original mint luster fully intact. Curiously, the NGC Census Report shows three such pieces. Given the rarity of Red patterns we have to wonder if that number actually represents the resubmission of this piece two more times in hopes of attaining a higher grade. The red color is even over each side and there are no mentionable contact marks and little in the way of carbon flecking. A few die striations can be seen to the right of the figure of Liberty.
