Gold Dollars
1877 G$1 MS65 PCGS. A familiar rarity in U.S. coinage that brings to mind the Indian cent and proof-only Shield Nickel issues from the same year. Just 3,920 pieces were produced and, like virtually all high grade survivors, the fields display glittering prooflike qualities. On this Gem specimen, there is also splendid field-to-device contrast and subtle reddish-golden color. Unlike other low-mintage Gold Dollar issues from the following decade, the 1877 does not appear to have been extensively hoarded and is not often available in any grade. Population: 11 in 65, 23 finer (4/17).
