Roman Judaea, Circa 4th Century AD., Iridescent Twin-handled Blue-Green Unguentarium. Thick-walled and very robust, this cosmetic vessel was blown in green glass. The bottle is shaped like earlier examples -- narrow, with teardrop shaped body and thin, cylindrical neck -- but on a conical foot. The body bears some vertical ribbing, twisted to form a raised, spiralling ornamentation. Two small handles are attached to the flaring rim and encircling ring below. Minor age crack and trivial ancient chip at the foot. Still, the bottle is stable and sound, with areas of nearly opaque silver and transparent violet iridescence throughout. Scarce. Height: 4¾".

Cf. Hermitage no. 409. Estimate Value $700 - 1,000
Ex Goldberg's Fairchild Family Trust Collection Coin Auction of May 28-30, 2001, lot 2833; Ex June 1986, Superior Galleries Sale of the bankrupt assets of the International Diamond Corporation. The ancient Roman glass was acquired thru Rafi Brown in the early 1980's.
