Trajan Decius. ; Trajan Decius; 249-251 AD, Samos, Ionia, AE 33-34, 15.24g. BM-338/339, RPC-667 (2 spec., the second represented by 9 old casts). Obv: AVT K [G] ME KY T - PAIANOC ?EKIOC Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed r. Rx: CA - MI on l. and above, ON in exergue, Two female figures, the one on the l. standing r., extending r. arm behind her and placing l. hand on hip; the one on the r. standing r., head l., holding patera in r. hand and with l. arm carrying child who holds cornucopia (Ploutos). Ex Seaby's Bulletin, August 1972, no. A1016; with original ticket in David Sear's handwriting. Apparently only the third original specimen recorded of this coin, the other two being (a) BMC 338 = RPC pl. 42, 667/1 and (b) a series of nine identical old casts, or of one original and eight old casts made from it, including BMC 339 (acquired in 1889) = RPC pl. 42, 667/2. That these nine specimens are identical so represent only one original was pointed out by RPC-667 in a note: "1-10: same pair of dies. All coins recorded except 1 seem to be cast from an original specimen." Our coin too is from the same dies, but is differently centered on the flan than (a) and (b) and is convincing in hand, so should be accepted as a third original specimen.
