Trajan Decius. AE 28; Trajan Decius; 249-251 AD, Samos, Ionia, AE 28, 11.52g. RPC-673 (22 spec.). Obv: A[VT K] TPAIA - NOC ?EKIOC Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed r. Rx: CAMI - ON Warrior holding round shield stepping r. onto prow, looking back and raising r. arm as though urging his comrades to follow on. Imhoof-Blumer, Monnaies grecques, p. 302, suggested that this reverse type may show King Anchaios, an Argonaut who was a hero of the Samians, boarding the ship Argo. Gift from Christian Blom, 20 December 1973. The same obverse die was also used for three other reverse types at Samos, RPC pl. 43, 675, 676/3, and 678. Possibly an ancient cast: very similar to RPC's specimens 12 and 22, as though all three of them derived from the same original, but the green deposits on our specimen look ancient.
