Trajan Decius. ; Trajan Decius; 249-251 AD, Tarsus, Cilicia, AE 26-27, 11.08g. RPC-1382 (23 spec., including ours), SNG Paris-1771 (same dies). Obv: ?V ?E G ?E? ?V ?E?I ??[?]????? around, ? - ? across field, Bust radiate, draped, cuirassed r. Rx: [?]????V ????????EO[?] around, ? / ? / ? in l. inner field and G / B in r. inner field, Pyramidal monument of Sandan, resting on short base decorated with three garlands and, below the short base, longer base decorated with foreparts of horned animals (oxen?); within, Sandan standing on back of lion pacing r.; on top of the pyramid, eagle standing with spread wings; above the monument, wreathlike arch resting on two columns with spiral fluting; in front of those columns, two male figures standing and looking inwards, each wearing Phrygian cap and raising outer hand to hold vertical spear. Ex CNG XXXI, 9-10 September 1994, lot 1279; this coin listed and illustrated as specimen 12 by RPC online-1367. The RPC description of the reverse type fails to describe the shorter garlanded base below the monument, and overlooks the columns supporting the wreathlike arch, wrongly saying that the two male figures hold up that arch.
