---

Provenance: Bt T. Millett October 2007.

The King's Private Road, the route from St James's Palace to Hampton Court, was first mentioned in the literature as far as back as 1626. Apart from royalty, the road was used by market gardeners and tradesmen taking their produce into London and it is thought that the passes, which were introduced c. 1723, were used by local landlords and tenants so they could use what is now the Kings road
