Meiji silver Pattern or Medallic Ryo ND (c. 1867?) AU, 42x58mm. 32.56g. A rare and mysterious item, its origin unknown to the numismatic community, but previously speculated to be a mint pattern produced just prior to the adoption of circular coinage. Certainly of high quality manufacture, with reflective fields and skilled engraving throughout. The edges appear machine reeded. Lightly handled, but exceptionally pleasing on the whole, as attractive tone highlights the raised surfaces. The only other example of this type that we are aware of was offered in a 1994 Ginza auction and brought 1,850,000 Yen (+ 10% BP), or approximately $18,000. Whether pattern or medal, this piece would certainly be a beautiful addition to a collector of modern-era Japanese silver type.
