MACEDON. Philotas, Tribal Chieftan or King, circa 410-380 BC. Chalkous (Bronze, 13 mm, 2.24 g, 10 h). Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. ΦIΛΩ Eagle standing right on thunderbolt, head left. Rogers, Copper Coinage of Thessaly, pg. 17, 2 (uncertain Thessalian issue). Wartenberg, Philotas 1. Very rare and with a pleasant dark green patina. Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Wartenberg attributes this interesting issue to Philotas, the father of Alexander's general Parmenion. The stylistic similarities to the bronze coinage of Skotussa indicate that Philotas may have been a local Chieftan or King in southern Macedon and/or northern Thessaly.
