KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 16.99 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in Thrace (?), circa 275/50-225. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right. Price -. Very rare and with beautiful golden toning. Very minor metal flaw on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the old stock of a Swiss Numismatist, acquired before 2005.

Alexander Tetradrachms without reverse symbols are rare and often hard to classify. While the legend arrangement and style of this interesting coin clearly point towards a Black Sea mint, a more precise attribution remains speculative. It does resemble some early Mesembria issues, but the lack of the obligate helmet symbol suggests a different origin.
