MYSIA. Kyzikos. Circa 550-500 BC. Obol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.64 g). Head of a lion to right, holding tunny in its jaws. Rev. Rough incuse square. BMC -. Klein -. Rosen -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Von Fritze -. Cf. Obolos 4 (2016), 319 corr. (same obverse die, but misdescribed as head of an eagle). Extremely rare, the second and best example known. Struck on a broad flan and darkly toned. Good very fine.

An unpublished type for Kyzikos safe for the Obolos auction appearance. That coin, with the obverse type misinterpreted due to a slight off-center strike, sold for no less than 1600 CHF.
