IONIA. Phokaia. Circa 550-500 BC. Obol (Silver, 8 mm, 0.88 g). Head of seal to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. BMC 79. Very rare and of attractive archaic style. Minor deposits, otherwise, good very fine.


The style of this coin is closer to early Phokaia Hektai (Bodenstedt 2.2) than to its Oboloi and Hemioboloi, which are usually of much cruder style. A beautiful coin in every way.
