Durotriges, uninscribed coinage (c. 58-30BC), silver Stater, 5.60g, abstract head of Apollo right, rev. disjointed horse (VA 1238; ABC 2160; S.-), a remarkably central strike exhibiting all details of the horse, of good silver appearance, about extremely fine
provenance. Bt. Rudd, January 2008. Brighstone Hoard, 19 October 2005, disclaimed by the British Museum, refs. 2005T443, 2010T323, 2011T286. . The Brighstone Hoard was recovered by a metal detecting club whilst searching on farmland on the western side of the Isle of Wight. Originally 967 base silver staters were unearthed alongside associated sherds of early Romano-British pottery, but two further addenda of coins from 2010 and 2011 brought the total to 990 specimens recorded at time of publication. Prior to its discovery, Rudd's so-called 'Spread Tail' variety which forms the bulk of the hoard (including this example), was extremely rare within the archaeological record. All associated British Museum treasure references have again been provided for completeness.
