The Durotriges were seafaring confederation of tribes centered on the southwestern coast of Britain. They enjoyed close cross-Channel ties with the Armorican tribes in northwestern Gaul, principally with the Coriosolites, and supported a large sea-borne trade. During the mid first century B.C., both Caesar's conquests in Gaul as well as pressure from Commios in West Sussex severely inhibited their trade, and their staters that were originally of good silver and sometimes even gold quickly became debased, such as the present example offered here.
