CV-N, two wide leaves above and below crescents back to back / CAM below, horseman right, holding short sword and shield. ABC 2888; Van Arsdell 2047; BMC 1866-7; SCBC 304. Very rare. Toned. Good very fine.

Cuobelinus was the greatest of all late Iron Age kings of Britain, and united the tribes of the Catuvellauni and Trinovantes after conquering the latter. He seems to have conquered Camulodunum and been quite proud of the achievement: no fewer than 44 of the 75 coin types he issued have the name inscribed on them, as does the coin offered here.
