MACEDON. Apollonia. circa 187-late 2nd century BC. (Bronze, 22 mm, 7.85 g, 7 h), Wreathed head of Dionysos right. Rev. ΑΠΟΛΛΩΝΟΣ Amphora. SNG ANS 224-6. SNG Cop 133. Well centered with a attractive dark green patina; nice details. Overstruck as usual, otherwise, very fine.
Ex. Lanz 150 (13.12.2010) lot 98.
The majority of the coins of "Apollonia" were overstruck. As planchets were used coins issued by Ptolemy Keraunos, (SNG ANS 224-226) eldest son of Ptolemy I of Egypt, and for a limited time King of Macedon (281-279). These coins were wrongly attributed to Paroreia by misinterpretation of the monogram on the reverse.
