1793 1C Chain, AMERI., S-1, B-1, R.4 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. The historic Chain AMERI. variety was the first coinage production for circulation at the Philadelphia Mint, coined in late February or early March of 1793. Walter Breen wrote that the first of these coins may have been struck on President Washington's birthday, but there is no documentary proof. This reddish olive-brown example exhibits myriad surface marks and trivial rim bumps, with tooling marks at the left side of the reverse. However, it is still a pleasing and highly important example of the historic coinage. Our EAC grade Good 5.
