Proof Twenty Cent Pieces
1877 20C PR66+ NGC. BF-1, R.3. Only proofs were struck in 1877 and 1878 to conclude the short-lived twenty cent series. Just 510 proofs were made in 1877, many of which went unsold and were melted when the denomination was officially abolished. With an estimated net mintage of 350 pieces sold, the 1877 is considerably scarcer overall than the 1878 proofs, with an estimated net mintage of 600 pieces sold. In high grades both issues are about equally rare.
The present coin is nearly brilliant on the obverse with a hint of pale-gold at the rims. The reverse is richly toned in ice-blue and lilac-gray shades. Sharply struck motifs are frosted with bold contrast and glassy-mirrored fields on the obverse, although the coin shows less contrast on the well-patinated reverse. Splendid eye appeal accompanies this Plus-graded Premium Gem, with just three numerically finer examples at PCGS and NGC combined. Census: 20 in 66 (1 in 66+, 1 in 66), 3 finer (5/17).
