1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Wide Date, B-20, BB-102, R.5, XF45 NGC. Bowers Die State II. A horizontal rim crack below the eagle's tail is just beginning to form, confirming the early die stage. Elusive in any grade above VF, the BB-102 is unknown in Uncirculated condition and the Condition Census for the variety consists entirely of About Uncirculated coins. The Bowers list of Notable Specimens includes one XF40 coin and two VF25 examples. The present coin is a Choice XF representative with rich, gunmetal-gray toning and deep-blue overtones that congregate at the margins. Struck a tiny bit off-center to the northeast, stretching the dentils in the lower-left quadrant. Census (for the variety): 4 in 45, 3 finer (5/17).
