Proof Morgan Dollars
1894 $1 PR67 Cameo NGC. A fairly generous mintage of 972 proof Morgan dollars was accomplished in 1894, to accompany a small business-strike production of 110,000 pieces. The elusive nature of high-grade business-strike examples has resulted in tremendous collector demand for proofs over the years. The proofs were delivered in quarterly batches, with the biggest batch (341 pieces) coming in December, probably in anticipation of strong demand as Christmas gifts. The 1894 proofs were among the best-produced issues in the Morgan dollar series.
The present coin is a spectacular Superb Gem, with razor-sharp definition on all design elements and deeply mirrored fields that contrast boldly with the frosty devices to create a stunning cameo effect. The impeccably preserved surfaces are essentially brilliant, with just the faintest hint of pale gold toning appearing at selected angles. Eye appeal is terrific. Census: 24 in 67 Cameo (3 in 67 ★), 7 finer (5/17).
