Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1885 $3 MS63 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint reduced its business-strike production of three dollar gold pieces in 1885 to a meager 801 pieces, all delivered in March. Many regular-issue coins have prooflike surfaces and nice Mint State coins have often been sold as proofs over the years. The issue began appearing at auction almost immediately, as an example appeared in lot 290 of the Stewart Douglas Collection (H.P. Smith, 6/1885): "1885: uncirculated; proof surface." As might be expected, the 1885 is an elusive issue in all grades today
This impressive Select specimen offers sharply detailed design elements throughout, and the pleasing orange-gold surfaces show only minor signs of contact. Much prooflike reflectivity is apparent in sheltered areas. Overall visual appeal is quite strong. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 18 in 63, 48 finer (5/17).
