Proof Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1886 $3 PR53 PCGS. A mintage of only 1,000 circulation strikes plus 142 proofs makes 1886 three dollar gold pieces rare in any format. The Bowers reference suggests approximately 130 to 160 business strike coins exist in all grades, while proof survival is estimated at 80 to 100 pieces. The present coin is certified PR53 (a scarce circulated proof), although proofs are difficult to discern from prooflike circulation strikes since some proofs, including this example, share the same dies. Pleasing medium-gold surfaces retain some prooflike characteristics as well as faint lines in the fields. The strike is sharp despite visible wear. Population: 1 in 53, 48 finer (5/17).
