Early Half Eagles
1800 $5 BD-2, High R.3, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. Mintage of half eagles increased significantly in 1800, to 37,628 pieces, with five die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BD-2 variety, with a Blunt 1 in the date and the second A in AMERICA touching both the eagle's claw and the branch. The BD-2 has a surviving population of 175-250 examples in all grades and probably accounted for 7,500-12,500 pieces of the reported mintage. This was the only use of the reverse die, but the obverse was used to strike four of the five known varieties of this date.
The present coin is a pleasing MS61 specimen, with well-detailed design elements and some interesting clash marks above the date. A faint die crack slopes down through I and B in LIBERTY, and another short crack extends from the edge to the right (facing) wing tip. The antique-gold surfaces are lustrous and lightly marked for the grade and the overall presentation is most attractive.
