Liberty Double Eagles
1872 $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint struck a relatively modest mintage of 251,880 Liberty double eagles in 1872 and the issue was overlooked by contemporary collectors, who generally favored proof representatives of Philadelphia gold issues. Like most Type Two twenties, the 1872 is seldom encountered in all Mint State grades and examples in MS62 condition are very rare.
This impressive MS62 specimen offers sharply detailed design elements and vivid orange-gold surfaces that retain much of their original mint luster. The expected number of minor contact marks are present, but the overall presentation is quite attractive. Population: 9 in 62, 3 finer. CAC: 5 in 62, 1 finer (5/17).
