Liberty Double Eagles
1875-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 10-C. A mintage of 111,151 double eagles at the Carson City Mint in 1875 understates the issue's scarcity in high grades, but this is still one of the more collectible dates from the facility, particularly in Mint State. The large production total explains the numerous die pairings known for the 1875-CC, as well occasional new variety discoveries. This is one such discovery, featuring a previously unidentified obverse paired with a reverse that shows the right C in the mintmark positioned partly over the T. Although the date placement is similar to Obverse 5, die chips and lines on Liberty's neck and near RT in LIBERTY suggest this is a different die. Strongly struck design elements are unworn. Soft mint luster glitters over luminous apricot-gold surfaces with scattered marks, although CC twenty appears smoother than the grade implies.
