Liberty Double Eagles
1883-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1-B. A centered mintmark and die lines near star 13 and within the shield confirm the attribution. The Carson City Mint limited double eagle output to 59,962 coins in 1883. That total was high compared to the Philadelphia Mint, which only struck proofs that year, but extremely small in relation to San Francisco's 1.2 million coin-mintage. The 1883-CC is typically seen in XF to AU condition. Certified populations at both grading services drop precipitously in Mint State, where the issue becomes very scarce.
This semiprooflike representative enjoys far great visual appeal than the MS60 grade suggests. Liberty's hair curls, the stars (save for 13), and the feathers are razor-sharp. Elements of green and rose complement orange-gold surfaces with flashy, partly reflective fields. An area of slight coppery color occurs near star 9. Abrasions are peppered throughout, but this Uncirculated Carson City double eagle remains readily appealing.
