Territorial Gold
(1831-1834) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, 30 G., MS60 NGC. K-1, R.4. Crafted from native North Carolina gold with a finely reeded edge and a slight central planchet bulge, this 30. G. dollar was struck on Christopher Bechtler's rudimentary screw press circa 1831-1834. North Carolina gold was more yellow and pure than other regional gold, although the fineness varied. Bechtler used as many as seven different colors to help gauge the fineness of gold.
This example displays attractive greenish-gold color with apricot-gold highlights. Some old, dark build-up exists within the crevices and corners of the lettering. Faint lines and tiny abrasions are seen with a glass, but in-hand the coin is reflective and appealing. At 30 grains, the coin was struck to the heaviest standard of the time. Census: 1 in 60, 12 finer (5/17).
