Territorial Gold
1852 $10 Humbert Ten Dollar XF45 ANACS. K-10, Low R.4. The U.S. Assay Office, nominally led by assayer Augustus Humbert, was only allowed to strike fifty dollar octagonal "slugs" during its first two years of operation. In 1852, permission was finally received from the Federal government to produce ten and twenty dollar pieces, which were sorely needed in the coin-deprived Gold Rush economy. Kagin-10 is the most available of the four ten dollar die varieties made that year. This is a relatively early die state without advanced crumbling on UNITED. The green-gold surfaces are lightly abraded but show minor smoothing on the field above the eagle's head. Listed on page 397 of the 2018 Guide Book.
