Territorial Gold
1852 $10 Assay Office Ten Dollar AU55 PCGS. K-12a(2), R.4. John Little Moffat sold his interest in Moffat & Co. in February of 1852, but the remaining partners (Curtis, Perry, and Ward) immediately formed the United States Assay Office of Gold and continued issuing gold coinage in California under government contract. The company issued coins in ten, twenty, and fifty dollar denominations in 1852, in either .884 or .887 fineness. This Choice AU .884 ten dollar piece represents the K-12a dies, with the O in OFFICE under the N of UNITED. The faint beads around the edge identify the late die state K-12a (2). This lightly worn example offers lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces that retain traces of original mint luster. Listed on page 398 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 30 in 55, 34 finer (5/17).
