1791 CENT Washington Small Eagle Cent MS65+ Brown PCGS. Baker-16, W-10630, Musante GW-17, R.3. In the years following the Revolution, English coiners attempted to persuade the newly independent United States to hire those firms for the purpose of providing coinage to the young nation. Sources suggest that 2,500 Washington Large Eagle cents and 1,500 Small Eagle cents were shipped to Philadelphia for distribution to legislators. Such a distribution may explain why many of these pieces exist in Mint State grades. However, few are equal to the present piece. Considerable orange mint luster remains in the protected areas on this lovely Gem Washington cent. Both sides exhibit a full cartwheel effect on impressive olive, chestnut, and steel surfaces. Listed on page 83 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 8 in 65 (3 in 65+) Brown, 4 finer (5/17).
