Proof Barber Half Dollars
1896 50C PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The Philadelphia Mint produced some of the most attractive Cameo proofs in the late 1890s, and this Premium Gem example is a good example. Dramatic white-on-black contrast exists between the glassy mirrored fields and the frost-white raised devices. A glass reveals no lines or cloudy spots to disturb the deep reflectivity. We note a solitary pinpoint planchet mark north of star 4, but it is minuscule and does not detract in the least from the eye appeal. The strike is sharp except at the right shield corner, which shows a bit of the characteristic incompleteness that haunts the design. CAC endorsed and justifiably so. Population: 15 in 66 (2 in 66+) Cameo, 5 finer. CAC: 9 in 66, 4 finer (5/17).
