Early Dollars
1801 $1 B-1, BB-211, R.3 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. VF Details. In the second edition of his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia 1794-1804, Dave Bowers describes Die State V with the reverse die bulged at AMER, based on a description in a 1992 Sotheby's catalog, and he further notes that he has not seen that die state. The obverse has delicate clash marks through the date and no die cracks. The reverse has clash marks from the date behind ES O, from the bust at OF, and from dentils at RICA. A crack begins at the left wing tip to STA, through the clouds and right wing, to the first A in AMERICA. A crack curves through that same letter to the ribbon, arcing toward the leaves, and through the I in AMERICA to the border. A prominent die bulge affects MER. This important piece has delicate gold and lilac toning on its light silver surfaces with faint hairlines.
