Liberty Double Eagles
1897-S $20 MS64+ PCGS. CAC. For collectors, the MS64 grade is both a curse and a blessing for the 1897-S double eagle. The issue is readily available in near-Gem grade, yet higher grades are rarely designated by either PCGS or NGC. As a result, the quality of MS64 coins ranges from average to a few exceptional, borderline Gem coins. This example falls into the latter category, with minimally marked surfaces and bold, frosty luster. The strike is sharp but not quite full. NGC reports just 24 numerically finer examples (5/17).
