Julia Domna (Augusta, AD 193-217). AR denarius. NGC Choice VF. Rome, under Septimius Severus, AD 205, or under Severs, Caracalla and Geta, AD 209-211. IVLIA AVGVSTA, draped bust of Domna right / MATER AVGG, Julia Domna as Cybele, holding branch, driving quadriga of lions left. RIC (Severus) 562. RSC 117. RCV 6592. A scarce and intriguing type!
RIC and RCV assign this coin to AD 205; however, the reverse legend MATER AVGG implies that Domna mother to two Augusti, and therefor was more likely struck after Geta was elevated to Augustus in the Autumn of AD 209, and before his murder by Caracalla in December 211.
