Caracalla (AD 198-217). AR denarius (2.83 gm). VF. Eastern mint, 202. Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right / P MAX TR P IIII COS, Caracalla standing left, capite velato, sacrificing from patera over tripod and holding scroll. RIC 342a. Light toning with underlying luster. With light porosity. Rare.
The reckoning in the reverse legend is off, since Caracalla became TR P V on 10 Dec. 201, but did not become COS until 1 Jan. 202; P MAX has to be resolved P(arthicus) MAX(imus).
