Commodus. AD 177-192. AR Denarius (16mm, 3.39 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 185. Laureate head right / Commodus, standing left on platform, holding scepter and haranguing three soldiers. RIC III 110d; MIR 18, 675-4/30; RSC 141. VF, toned. Rare.

Soon after beginning the celebration for his decennalia, or tenth year of power, Commodus faced a revolt by Perennis, his praetorian prefect, who intended to replace the emperor with his son. Though Commodus quelled the uprising, it did require him to pay a largesse to the army and is the event commemorated on the reverse types depicting him haranguing his troops.
