1766 1/2 P Pitt Halfpenny AU53 PCGS. Betts-519, Breen-251, W-8350. A chocolate-brown example of this popular token, struck in honor of British statesman William Pitt, who in 1766 turned his efforts toward repealing the American Stamp Act. This is an attractive piece with only modest wear over the high points of the design. A few scattered marks in front of Pitt's face are toned over, as are some light scratches in front of the reverse ship. These were almost certainly struck in England and exported by one of the British traders who felt that the Stamp Act impeded commerce. One of the few 18th century pieces bearing the word AMERICA. Listed on page 52 of the 2018 Guide Book.
