Proof Two Cent Pieces
1873 2C Closed 3 PR65 Brown PCGS. A proper light source is all that is needed to turn this eye-appealing Gem two cent proof from glossy brown to amazing iridescent cobalt-blue. Ticks on the fourth shield gule and under the 2 identify the coin. At least 600 specimens were struck with a Closed 3 early on in 1873. Breen notes that some likely went unsold and were melted after April 1 of that year, when legislation abolishing the denomination and slightly increasing the weights of silver coins was passed. Population: 19 in 65 Brown, 10 finer (6/17).
