Early Half Dimes
1803 H10C Large 8, V-1, LM-2, R.4, XF40 PCGS. The LM-2 die pairing is scarcer than the LM-3 (the other Large 8 die combination) and more available than the rare Small 8 variety, LM-1. The peripheral obverse right-side devices are strike-doubled from ERTY through stars 8-13, as the hammer die was loose and "bounced" when the coin was struck. This piece is especially well-detailed on the obverse, although a scrape appears in the right field just past Liberty's nose. Considerable strike weakness shows on the upper clouds and some of the stars on the reverse. The surfaces are silver to gray with gold accents near the rims. Seldom seen in high grade. Population: 9 in 40, 34 finer (6/17).
