Mercury Dimes
1942/1-D 10C FS-101 MS63 Full Bands PCGS. The 1942/1-D Mercury dime is understated and underrated compared to the overdated dimes struck at the Philadelphia Mint that same year. The underdigits on the Denver coins are less pronounced, explaining how the variety went undetected for more than 20 years after its release. That, in turn, accounts for the scarcity of the 1942/1-D in high grades: Examples continued to circulate, while collectors saved quantities of the bold 1942/1. Curiously, while the Philadelphia overdate is stronger, this Denver mint issue tends to come better-struck. This is a bright, lustrous example that has an even coating of reddish patina. No objectionable marks are present on either side.
