Seated Quarters
1863 25C MS65 PCGS. CAC. The widespread hoarding, exporting, and melting of silver and gold coins during the Civil War explains the rarity in all grades of these issues. In the case of the 1863 quarter, the mintage of 191,600 pieces should be sufficient to supply collectors with dozens of high-grade examples, but that is simply not the case. Only 18 other Gems have been certified by PCGS, with 10 finer (6/17). This example has lovely, satiny mint luster and is sharply struck in all areas. There are no abrasions of note and each side generally presents as brilliant, despite a slight overlay of pinkish-rose patina when the coin is closely examined.
