(1694) 1/2 P London Elephant Token, Thick Planchet, Hodder 2-B, W-12040, R.2, AU58+ PCGS. The Elephant tokens were coined in England sometime between 1672 and 1694, and are collected alongside certain other English pieces as part of the American colonial series. These pieces feature on elephant on the obverse, and a shield with GOD PRESERVE LONDON on the reverse. A few varieties have reverse inscriptions that pertain to the Carolina or New England plantations. This piece is an exceptional near-Mint example with virtually full luster and lovely chestnut-brown surfaces, showing splashes of maroon patina on the obverse.
