1787 CONNCT Connecticut Copper, ETLIR, M. 33.29-gg.1, W-3810, R.5, AU58 PCGS. CAC. This elusive variety is rarely found in higher grades; the Ford Collection had a flawed VF, the Newman Collection example was graded VF30 NGC, and the coin in the 1975 EAC sale was graded Fine. A dozen years ago, we handled an AU55 PCGS example previously from the Essex Institute. We know of only one other comparable piece. This late die state beauty has a prominent die bulge at the left obverse with other die flaws, and a thin horizontal die crack from the center to the edge at 9 o'clock, with a few other die flaws. The physical appearance is outstanding, despite weak striking due to the late die state, with lustrous olive-brown surfaces and faint traces of mint red. This is the finest PCGS certified example of the variety with the ETLIR reverse legend. Listed on page 64 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 1 in 58, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 58, 0 finer (6/17).
