1783 C NOVA Nova Constellatio Copper, Pointed Rays, Large US, Crosby 1-A, W-1860, R.4, AU58 PCGS. The dentil impressions below STEL and ATIO on the obverse were part of the original die, and were caused by another die falling at an angle onto this die as they were being engraved, according to common thought. This is the scarcest of the three 1783 Nova Constellatio varieties, featuring Pointed Rays on the obverse and a large US on the reverse. A few splashes of maroon patina reside on the still lustrous mahogany and olive-brown surfaces of this lovely example. This example is tied for the finest that PCGS has certified and likely ranks high in the Condition Census. Listed on page 56 of the 2018 Guide Book. Population: 4 in 58, 0 finer (6/17).
